The Padma River in Rajshahi is one of the major rivers in the delta region formed by the confluence of the Ganges and Jamuna Rivers. Stretching over vast swathes of fertile plains, It serves as alifeline for millions, offering water for irrigation, fishing, and navigation. Rajshahi, known as the Silk City and Education City, lies on the banks of the Padma and is famous for its Silk industry,Mangoes, and Lychees. 

The river has played a pivotal role in shaping the culture and economy of the region. Along its banks are notable landmarks like the Harding Bridge and the Lalon Shah Bridge. The river is also infamous for its erosion, significantly impacting the lives of the riverside communities. Efforts have been made to address this through embankments and other river management projects. The Padma is especially scenic during monsoon season when its breadth expands and the surrounding greenery comes to life. However, it poses a natural hazard during this period, with the potential for dangerous floods.The Padma is one of the biggest rivers in Bangladesh, and is the main distributaries of the Ganges. When the Ganges enters Bangladesh at Rajshahi, it takes the new name of the Padma. The city of Rajshahi is situated on the banks of the river. The Padma is 120 km long and 4 to 8 km wide. Since 1966, over 66,000 hectares of land has been lost due to erosion of the Padma.The Padma, Sanskrit for lotus flower, is a mentioned in ancient Hindu scripts as a byname for the Goddess Lakshmi. Eighteenth-century geographer James Rendell referred to a former course of the Ganges north of its present channel, as follows: Appearances favor very strongly the opinion, that the Ganges had its former bed in the tract now occupied by  the lakes and morasses between Nattore and Jaffiergunge, striking out of the present course at Bauleah to a junction with the Burrampooter or Megna near Fringy bazaar; where the accumulation of two such mighty streams probably scooped out the present amazing bed of the Megna. West Bengal government hit a new low over the issue of Ganga-Padma erosion as repeated requests made by the state administration seeking funds to repair eroding riverbanks yielded no result.The problem of erosion also went to such an extent that it posed a serious threat to the border security issues with hungry water level fast eating into the Indian territory in various parts of Malda and Murshidabad - two West Bengal districts sharing borders with neighboring Bangladesh.The Padma River in Rajshahi has been the heartland of agrarian Bangladesh, nurturing a rich culinarytradition influenced by the river bounty. The river provides an array of fish, which is an integral part of the local diet. The fertile soil along the banks of the Padma River contributes to the cultivation of various crops, including rice, mangoes, litchis, and vegetables, forming the base for an abundance of vegetarian dishes. Over the years, Rajshahi has seen a blend of different food customs as a result of trade routes,cultural exchanges, and historical influences from Hindu and Muslim reigns, thus creating a unique food culture that highlights both vegetarian and non-vegetarian fare, sans beef and pork due to religious and cultural practices.The Padma River, a significant river in Bangladesh, is renowned for its dynamic course and scenic beauty.It’s a main distributaries of the mighty Ganges, known locally as the Ganga, which flows down from India and meets the Jamuna River in Bangladesh.
