A Dhaka court on Tuesday fixed 16 May 2024 for submission of the probe report in the murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.
With this, the deadline for submission of the probe report in the case deferred for the 107th time.
The current investigating officer RAB's Additional Superintendent of Police Khandkar Mohammad Shahidul Alam was assigned to submit the report on Tuesday but as he failed to submit the report, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubul Haque fixed the new date for submitting it.
Maasranga Television news editor Sagar Sarowar and his wife ATN Bangla senior reporter Meherun Runi were found dead at their rented apartment in the city’s Pashchim Raja Bazar area on 11 February 2012.
Runi’s brother Nousher Ali Roman filed a case with Sher-e-Banglanagar Police Station on the following day.
A total of eight people including Rooney's friend Tanvir Rahman were arrested in the case. The other arrestees are - security guard Enam Ahmed alias Humayun Kabir, Rafiqul Islam, Bakul Mia, Mintu alias Baggira Mintu alias Masum Mintu, Kamrul Hasan Arun, Palash Rudra Pal and Abu Sayed.
Among them, Tanveer and Palash Rudra secured bail. The rest are still in the prison.
The case initially fell under the jurisdiction of the Sherebangla Nagar police station, with subsequent investigation overseen by Detective Police (DB) North, led by Police Inspector Md. Rabiul Alam, starting on 16 February.
However, following a directive from the High Court, the responsibility for the investigation was transferred to RAB. Despite 107 attempts spanning nearly 12 years, RAB has yet to submit the investigation report, raising concerns about the procedural efficiency and investigative efficacy in resolving the case.
