Offcials Rajshahi University (RU) have observed a full-day work stoppage on Wednesday demanding the reinstatement of the dependent quota for the 2024-25 academic session.
The strike began at 9 a.m yesterday and will continue until 4 p.m. today While essential services such as transport, electricity, healthcare, and security are operational, nearly all other administrative activities have been halted, causing significant disruptions, especially for students needing certificates and mark sheets.
The protest follows the university administration's decision on January 1 to reduce the dependent quota from 5% to 1% for the upcoming academic session. This move sparked student protests, which led to the Vice-Chancellor's complete cancellation of the dependent quota on January 2. However, staff members, particularly from the Officers’ Association, have expressed their dissatisfaction with the decision and are demanding its reversal.
Mukhtar Hossain, Acting president of the Officers’ Association, clarified that the protest is not about seeking a traditional "quota," but about securing institutional benefits for their children, similar to those provided in other government organizations. "We are not asking for special treatment but for the same institutional rights granted to employees in other public sectors," Hossain said.
As the strike continues, students are facing delays in completing administrative tasks, with many unable to collect vital academic documents. Despite the disruption, the protesting officers have vowed to continue their movement until their demands are met.
The university administration now faces mounting pressure to find a solution that addresses the concerns of both staff and students.
