Road accidents claim 7,902 lives in 2023: Jatri Kalyan Samity

As many as 7,902 people died and 10,372 others injured in 6,261 road accidents across the country in 2023, according to a report of Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity.
In the same period, 2,031 motorcycle accidents killed 2,152 people and injured 1,339 people, which is 32.43 percent of the total accidents, 27.23 percent of the dead and 12.90 percent of the injured.
The report was published on Sunday after analysing accident reports published in the country's national and regional dailies and online media during the period.
General Secretary Md Mozammel Haque Chowdhury of the Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity presented the annual report in a press conference organised at Sagar-Runi Auditorium of Dhaka Reporters Unity in Segun Bagicha of the capital today.
According to the annual report, the number of registered vehicles as well as small vehicles especially motorcycles and easybikes has increased by 4 to 5 times in the last 09 years. The number of easybikes, motorcycles and tri-wheelers flouting the government's ban on free movement on national and regional highways is increasing causing more road accidents and fatalities.
Besides, 512 people were killed and 475 injured in 520 railway accidents and 91 people died in 148 accidents on waterways during this period, the report added.
