Reimagining Bangladesh’s Printing and Publishing Industry: Pathways to Innovation and Growth

By Nafew Sajed Joy

Bangladesh’s printing and publishing industry boasts a rich history that dates back to 1847-48 with the establishment of Bartabah, the first printing press in Rangpur. In Dhaka, Alexander Farbeck’s Dhaka Press marked the beginning of the city’s printing journey, though it was limited to English-language publications. It wasn’t until 1860, with the launch of the Bangla Press, that the region embraced Bengali-language printing. By the 1950s, pioneering presses like Eden, Paramount were leading the way with the adoption of advanced machines, laying the foundation for the modern industry.

However, despite these advancements, Bangladesh’s printing and publishing industry has lagged behind global standards. Unlike sectors such as ready-made garments (RMG), which have embraced research and innovation, the printing industry remains largely stuck in traditional practices. The sector lacks formal training programs, research and development (R&D) initiatives, and modern technologies—all of which are essential for competing in a global marketplace.

A Comparative Look: RMG vs. Printing and Publishing

The RMG sector’s success lies in its continuous investment in R&D and integration of cutting-edge technologies. It has embraced innovation by fostering partnerships with engineering universities and fashion institutes, ensuring a steady flow of skilled professionals. In contrast, the printing and publishing sector, often family-run, relies heavily on traditional methods and on-the-job learning. The reluctance to modernize stems from a lack of formal education and concerns over unpredictable profit margins. Publishers fear that investing in new machinery will not yield immediate returns, as books are not always a priority for consumers.

Yet, the global demand for high-quality printed materials presents an enormous opportunity. Bangladesh’s printing industry could play a significant role in the international market, just as the RMG sector does. But to achieve this, both the government and private sector must take proactive steps to support innovation.

The Role of Research in Shaping the Future

As a former student of the Department of Printing and Publication Studies at the University of Dhaka, I am acutely aware of the disconnect between academic research and its application in industries like printing and publishing. Although we graduate with specialized knowledge, the industry’s lack of preparedness to implement these skills leaves many of us questioning our future. In contrast, the RMG sector continues to evolve through research-driven initiatives, such as its commitment to achieving a net-zero carbon future—a goal discussed at the recent Bangladesh Climate Action Forum 2024.

Bangladesh’s printing and publishing industry could benefit from a similar approach. According to the International Energy Agency, the pulp and paper sector accounted for nearly 2% of all industrial emissions in 2022. With paper demand expected to rise, it is imperative for the industry to reduce its environmental footprint. By adopting sustainable practices and modern technologies, Bangladesh’s printing sector can contribute to global climate goals while securing its place in the international market.

Unlocking Potential: A Collaborative Approach

The untapped potential of Bangladesh’s printing and publishing industry can only be unlocked through a coordinated effort. This includes reducing taxes on raw materials, providing financial incentives for innovation, and encouraging investments in R&D. Talented graduates from specialized departments such as Printing and Publication Studies must be leveraged to drive technological advancements in the sector.

Furthermore, there is a need for collaboration between academia, industry, and the government to foster research-driven industrial growth. Establishing internships, research funds, and partnerships will bridge the gap between knowledge and practice, ensuring that graduates have the opportunity to apply their skills in meaningful ways.

Conclusion: A Sustainable Future for the Printing Industry
Bangladesh’s future prosperity hinges on its ability to integrate research and innovation across its industries. By replicating the successful strategies of the RMG sector—continuous investment in R&D, specialized training, and sustainable practices—the printing and publishing industry can become a vital contributor to the national economy.

The time for action is now. Both the government and private sector must recognize the untapped potential of this industry and take bold steps toward building a world-class, sustainable printing and publishing industry in Bangladesh. Only then can we ensure that the resources invested in education translate into meaningful economic growth, positioning Bangladesh as a competitive force on the global stage.
