Chilmari (Kurigram) Correspondent
A protest rally was held in Chilmari, Kurigram, condemning the brutal murder of a businessman by stoning in Dhaka’s Mitford area, as well as the rise in extortion and criminal activities across the country on Saturday afternoon, under the banner of General Students and Citizens, with participation from people of various professions and backgrounds.
After the Asr prayer, a protest procession started in front of the Central Jame Mosque at Thanahat Bazar and marched through various roads of the upazila. It concluded with a gathering at the LSD Mor area.
During the rally, speakers strongly condemned the inhumane act of killing someone by stoning. They said that the rampant rise in extortion, the audacity of organized crime syndicates, unchecked lust for power, and a deep-rooted culture of impunity are the root causes of such brutality.
Expressing their anger, speakers said that extortion has infiltrated every layer of society, making ordinary lives unbearable. They also warned that mob violence triggered by trivial issues is becoming alarmingly common—an alarming and shameful trend for any civilized society.
Speakers at the rally were Md. Hojrot Ali, Badruzzaman, Rashedul Islam, Motaleb Rahman, Mahmudul Hasan, Alamin, and Moniruzzaman Liton.
