Poverty's cruel grip stalled dreams of three children

Md Hasan Ali, Baghaichhari ( Rangamati)

People live with dreams. A safe home, two square meals a day, and smiles on their children's faces are among the most basic aspirations of any family. But not everyone is fortunate enough to fulfill those dreams. While some move forward toward a better life, others struggle every day simply to survive.

The life of Minu Akter, a divorced woman from South Para of Ugalchhari under Ward No. 5 of Baghaichhari Union in Baghaichhari Upazila of Rangamati, reflects this harsh reality. She is enduring extreme hardship while raising her two daughters and one son.

A visit to the family's home revealed that their house has been crudely built with discarded tin sheets and plastic. The dilapidated roof leaks from several places whenever it rains. As a result, on rainy nights, Minu and her children are often forced to sit indoors holding umbrellas, while at other times they have no choice but to seek shelter in their neighbors' homes.

Minu Akter said that she survives by working as a domestic helper and with occasional support from neighbors. Despite immense hardship, she managed to educate her eldest daughter, Liza Akter, up to the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) level. However, due to financial constraints, Liza's higher education now remains uncertain. The education of her second daughter and youngest son is also at risk. There are even days when the family cannot afford three meals a day, making a normal life seem like an unattainable dream.

Local residents said that Minu Akter has been living in extreme poverty for many years. Although neighbors provide assistance according to their means, they are unable to offer a permanent solution. Without a safe home and a sustainable source of income, the family is unlikely to escape its current hardship.

According to members of the local community, providing employment for Liza Akter or bringing the family under a government rehabilitation program could give them a chance to rebuild their lives.

Considering the family's humanitarian condition, local residents have urged the concerned authorities, public representatives, and compassionate members of society to come forward and extend their support.
