Pacific Jeans Affiliate Casuals closed due to labour unrest

Chittagong Bureau

The authorities have announced the closure of two units of Pacific Casuals Limited, a subsidiary of Pacific Jeans Group of Chittagong on Sunday. CEPZ announced the closure of Unit-1 and Unit-2 of the factory.

In a notice signed by the senior manager of the human resources and administration department of the factory, it has been informed that due to the illegal stoppage of work in the factory by the workers and the raising of unfair claims, the authorities have decided to close the factory for an indefinite period from February 10 (Monday) as per Section 12(1) of the EPZ Labor Act 2019. All factory operations will remain closed until further notice.

An official of Pacific Jeans said on the condition of anonymity that there was a movement in all our factories a month ago. The owners accepted all the demands of the workers. But workers at Pacific Casuals protested today (Sunday) morning demanding additional benefits including breakfast. The factory was closed at around two o'clock when they rioted for extra benefits and not for salaries.

The managing director of Pacific Group, Syed Mohammad Tanveer, was called several times on his mobile phone to inquire about this, but he did not respond.
