More than 500 illegal businesses and establishments have been evicted from the Chandpur-Comilla regional highway.
The eviction drive took place from Thursday morning to afternoon, led by the district administration and the Roads Department of Chandpur, targeting illegal structures built along the road in the Doabhanga area of Shahrasti upazila.
A few days earlier, traders from Waruk Bazar, Doabhanga, and Kaliapara Bazar in the upazila were ordered to remove these establishments at their own responsibility.
Shahrasti Upazila Executive Officer Md. Yasir Arafat said that the drive aims to reduce traffic congestion and facilitate smoother vehicle movement.
Local residents of Doabhanga reported that although an eviction drive had been conducted previously, the area was once again illegally occupied on both sides of the road shortly after.
Wasiuddin Ahmed, sub-divisional engineer (Additional Duty) of the Public Roads Subdivision Chandpur, told UNB that the eviction of illegal establishments began last November, starting from Bakila Bazar in Hajiganj Upazila.
He added that the drive will continue in phases to clear illegal shops and establishments from all sections of the road.
