Two people were injured and one person was killed in Patuakhali fireworks display in the evening after the moonlit night of Eid.

At 8:30 pm on March 30, two teenagers and a child from separate places were injured and the doctor on duty declared the child dead when he was brought to the emergency department of the 250-bed Patuakhali Hospital.

It is learnt that the two injured teenagers are Bellal (16) and Rabbi (15). The teenagers are neighbors from Purba Hakatullah village of Badarpur union in Patuakhali Sadar upazila. On the day of the incident, after seeing the moon in the evening, several teenagers were setting off fireworks in an open area near their house. At that time, two teenagers named Bellal and Rabbi were injured on the spot while setting off multiple fireworks together.

The seriously injured Billal's left wrist was shattered by the firecracker and was sent to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. The other teenager, Rabbi, suffered injuries to two fingers on his right hand and went home after receiving primary treatment.

In the other incident, the deceased child, Rafi (8), is the son of Monir Hawlader, a fishmonger from Munsef Para in Patuakhali Municipality. On the same day, after the Eid moon was sighted, during Maghrib prayers, Rafi went to the courtyard next to his house alone to burst firecrackers. However, there were no witnesses at the time of the incident.

During the incident, Rafi's firecracker made a loud noise, but the tin shell of the firecracker hit his throat. The injured Rafi ran to his house and fell on the floor in a bloody state. At that time, his family members took him to the Patuakhali 250-bed hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead. The tin shell of the firecracker tore the throat and esophagus of the child Rafi. This caused him to bleed profusely.

Patuakhali Sadar Police Station OC Md. Imtiaz Ahmed said, "We are aware of the accident but have not received any complaint from the families of the deceased or injured. We are taking legal action on how to control the burning of firecrackers in the future."
