Nurul Haque Nur calls for making Union Parishads more effective

State Minister for Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment and Member of Parliament for Patuakhali-3 Nurul Haque Nur has called for making Union Parishads more effective to ensure development and better public services at the grassroots level.
“Union Parishads are the backbone of development at the grassroots level. They play a vital role in bringing government services to people’s doorsteps,” he said.
The State Minister made the remarks while addressing an exchange-of-views meeting with chairmen, members, reserved women members and administrators of 12 Union Parishads in Galachipa Upazila of Patuakhali on Saturday.
The meeting was held at 10:00 am at the auditorium of the Galachipa UNO office.
The meeting discussed strengthening the local government system, social safety-net programmes, rural infrastructure development, public services and various development activities.
Union Parishad representatives raised issues related to roads, canal excavation, social protection programmes, civic services and development projects in their respective areas and sought effective measures to address them.
Galachipa UNO Abuzar Md. Ejajul Haque presided over the meeting, while OC of Galachipa Police Station Md. Imtiaz Ahmed attended as a special guest.
Among others, Galachipa Upazila BNP Convener Haji Mohammad Golam Mostafa, Gana Odhikar Parishad President Md. Hafizur Rahman, Municipal BNP Convener Md. Rafiqul Islam Khan, BNP Joint Convener A. Sobhan, Gana Odhikar Parishad Member Secretary Md. Zakir Munshi and State Minister Nurul Haque Nur’s representative for Galachipa-Dashmina, Abu Naim, were present.
Nurul Haque Nur said strengthening Union Parishads could play an important role in improving the living standards of rural people. He urged local representatives to work in coordination with the people to ensure effective public services and development.
Later, the State Minister inspected BRAC Shelter Centre No. 140, the Model Mosque and several canal excavation projects in Galachipa. He also exchanged views with local journalists.
