New York City mayor bailed in bribery-corruption case
USA Bureau
New York City Mayor Eric Adams appeared in Manhattan federal court on Friday (September 27) and was charged with receiving foreign money for campaign funds, bribery, and abuse of power.
At this time, the mayor claimed himself innocent before the honorable court. However, Federal Magistrate-Judge Kathryn Parker informed the mayor that he was required to appear in court on Wednesday. At the same time, the witnesses of this case have been ordered not to go around. Note that this is the first time in the city's 360-year history that a mayor has been charged with a serious crime while in office.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Celia Cohen said, however, the mayor can speak to anyone for personal needs. Meanwhile, the mayor's lawyer, Alex Spiro, said he will appear in court on Wednesday to file a motion to dismiss the case.
The Judge mentioned to the Mayor that the mayor's bail will be canceled if he disrupts the proceedings of the case or does not appear on the appointed date. Government lawyers said the mayor could face a maximum of 45 years in prison if convicted of all five charges.
Meanwhile, many, including Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, have called for the immediate resignation of the mayor, who is out on bail after his arrest on a felony charge. State Governor Kathy Hokul said she would be forced to remove the mayor if he did not voluntarily resign. In that case, the city's public advocate will serve as acting mayor until a special election is held.
