New political party needed as existing ones fail to understand people: Hasnat

Staff Correspondent

A new youth-led political party will be launched this month after collecting opinions of over one lakh general citizens as existing parties have been failing to realize people’s aspirations, said Hasnat Abdullah, one of the key leaders of last year’s anti-fascist movement.

Hasnat, a Dhaka University student, made the remark at a press conference held at the central office of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in the capital on Wednesday.

He also announced the start of a weeklong campaign to directly collect opinions from the general people regarding the upcoming party and the country’s present political landscape.

The new party will be based on the opinions of the people, Hasnat told reporters.

Nasir Uddin Patwary, convener of Jatiya Nagorik Committee, said no adviser of the interim government will be allowed in the new party as long as they hold their posts.

Hasnat is a key member of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, which led last year's July-August mass uprising to oust the authoritarian Awami League regime after 15 years of futile attempts by political parties. Since the ouster of Awami League government on 5 August last year, it was widely believed that the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, along with another key youth-led platform Jatiya Nagorik Committee, will launch a political party to fulfill their aspirations for a political landscape free from corruption and terrorism.
