New gas reserve found in Sylhet gas fields

Sylhet Bureau

Bangladesh has discovered a new gas reserve at a development well under the Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (SGFL), a company of Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla).
As a part of the test, a flame was ignited on the well's mouth on Monday evening, said the officials at SGFL.
The Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company (Bapex), also a company of Petrobangla, discovered the reserve at the Sylhet 9 well in Jaintapur of Sylhet.
Bapex started drilling the well in October last year and after 94 days, it found the gas reserve at a depth of 1,998 meters underground.
The reserve's volume will only be known 72 hours after a drill stem test is conducted.
Previously, the SGFL had awarded the well to Bapex at a cost of Tk70 crore for a period of 110 days, sources said.
However, the officials at both companies have not been able to predict the volume of the reserve.
A well becomes commercially viable for the product if it has 500 to 600 psi (pressure per square inch) at the production level, sources at Petrobangla said.
Currently, there are 22 gas fields in the country from which around 1661 mmcf of gas is produced per day.
The state-owned Bapex discovered some of these fields, including the Sylhet 3 and Sylhet 4 wells and Shahbazpur gas fields.
