The National Security Committee has sat in a meeting amid the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement's non-cooperation programme.
The session commenced after 11:00am on Sunday at Ganabhaban, chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The 29-member committee also includes ministers, state ministers, security advisors, secretaries, and the chiefs of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Coast Guard, Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), and National Security Intelligence (NSI).
Formed in 2019, the committee is tasked with reviewing all security and defence-related issues and activities in the country, evaluating and reassessing the internal security situation, taking necessary actions on security matters, and making recommendations to the Cabinet as needed.
The Cabinet Division provides secretarial support to the committee.
This is the first meeting of the National Security Committee during the current government's tenure. The last meeting was held on 15 November 2023, nearly a month and a half before the national elections on January 7.
The current session aims to address the growing student unrest and protests triggered by the quota reform movement.
Thousands of students and various civic groups have taken to the streets, demanding the government's resignation and justice for those killed and injured during the movement since last month.
