MP Azim murder : General secretary of Jhenidah Awami League detained

The police on Tuesday afternoon detained Saidul Karim Mintu, general secretary of Awami League’s Jhenaidah district unit, over the murder of late lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar.

A team of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detained Saidul from the capital’s Dhanmondi area, sources said.

He was taken to the DB headquarters on Minto Road in the capital for preliminary interrogation.

DMP Additional Commissioner and DB chief Harun Or Rashid on Tuesday told reporters at his office said that a number of Jhenaidah Awami League leaders have been put under close observation over the murder of MP Azim.

DB officers have interrogated the arrestees in Bangladesh and India for involvement in the gruesome crime.

Based on information collected during the quizzing, the DB arrested Awami League member Babu Kazi Kamal Ahmed Babu. Babu is now being grilled in remand.

On 12 May, MP of Jhenaidah-4 (Kaliganj) constituency Azim went to Kolkata, India for treatment.

Next day, he was killed in a flat at Sanjeeva Gardens in Kolkata.

To date, the DB has arrested four suspects. Among them, three – Simul Bhuyian, Tanvir Bhuiyan and Celesty Rahman – have given confessional statements before a Dhaka court.

The Kolkata CID has arrested two other suspects: Jihad Howlader and Siam Hossain.
