Monsoon hits India two days earlier than usual

International Desk

Hastened by cyclone Remal, the southwest monsoon set in over India starting with Kerala coast and parts of the northeast today, two days earlier than usual.

Weather scientists said the cyclone, which pounded West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts on Sunday, pulled the monsoonal flow to the Bay of Bengal, which could be one of the reasons for early onset over the northeast.

"Southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala and advanced into most parts of northeast India today, the 30th May, 2024," the India Meteorological Department said.

The southwest monsoon usually enters India on June 1 every year with slight deviation at times. What is unusual this time is that the monsoon has simultaneously set over Kerala and north east India. Usually, the north eastern part of India gets monsoon a few days after Kerala.

Kerala and northeast India are experiencing pre-monsoon rains in the past few days but the Met department announced the formal arrival of the monsoon only after it met all the onset parameters.

The IMD has already predicted that the monsoon rainfall across India during June-September season is most likely to be above normal.
