In observance of the upcoming ‘Fall of Fascism Day’ on August 5, authorities in Ashulia, Dhaka, have launched an initiative to construct 52 ‘July Martyrs Monuments’ commemorating those killed in the July-August mass uprising.
The campaign officially began on Wednesday with the identification of martyrdom sites where the memorials will be established.
Tamim Khan, Chief Coordinator of the Verification Committee for Martyred and Injured Persons, confirmed the details earlier this afternoon. "So far, we have identified 39 locations marked with red circles," he said. "We have records of 52 martyrs. Once all 52 sites are confirmed, monuments will be constructed at each location. These will serve as enduring symbols of sacrifice, where tributes will be paid on August 5."
Family members of the martyrs expressed gratitude for the initiative, noting that the monuments will preserve not only the memory but also the ideals of those who gave their lives for the nation. "This is a proud moment for us," said a family representative. "These memorials will immortalize their sacrifice and keep their spirit alive for future generations."
Among the attendees at today’s event were Md. Mamun Khondokar, Chief Executive Officer of Dhaka District Council (who declined to comment on the matter), Sadia Akter, Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Ashulia Revenue Circle, and Shafiqul Islam Suman, Officer-in-Charge (Operations) of Ashulia Police Station.
The planned monuments are set to stand not only as symbols of national gratitude but also as testaments to the enduring struggle for democracy and justice in Bangladesh’s history.
