Measles: 5 more patients die in a day

Five more people with measles symptoms have died in a 24-hour period, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). Currently, 5,016 people across the country are hospitalised with dengue systems. In the thirty days after the initial measles outbreak, the number of patients hospitalised had stood at 2,005. This means the current hospitalisation load is more than double that of the time.
The health directorate says that, since Mar 15, 861 people with measles symptoms have died. In addition, 99 people who had laboratory-confirmed measles have died over the period.
According to the DGHS bulletin on Friday, 70 fresh cases of the highly-contagious disease have been confirmed in the 24 hours from 8am on Thursday.
Dhaka Division has recorded the highest number of deaths among people with measles symptoms, with 385 fatalities so far.
Sylhet follows with 148 deaths, while Rajshahi has reported 92, Mymensingh 74, Chattogram 64, Barishal 51, Khulna 33 and Rangpur 14.
The DGHS said 1,100 people with symptoms consistent with the disease sought treatment at hospitals across the country in the latest 24-hour period, with 1,036 of them admitted.
Of the new admissions, 249 were in Dhaka, 271 in Chattogram, 128 in Sylhet, 126 in Barishal, 55 in Khulna, 61 in Mymensingh, 29 in Rajshahi and 18 in Rangpur.
A total of 135,473 patients with measles symptoms have been admitted to hospitals since Mar 15, while 130,457 have been discharged after treatment.
The number of suspected measles cases has reached 154,792, while 18,796 cases have been confirmed.
