Local member of parliament (MP) Shahriar Alam has threatened to file a murder case against Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) mayor AHM Khairuzzaman over the death of Bagha upazila Awami League general secretary Ashraful Islam Babul in the clash between two factions of the ruling party.

He also said Rajshahi-3 (Poba-Mohon) constituency's MP Md Asaduzzaman and Bagha Upazila Parishad chairman Layeb Uddin would also be made accused in the case.

The former state minister for foreign affairs issued the threat before attending the namaj-e-janaza of Ashraful Islam Babul at Bagha Model Uccha Vidyalaya ground in the upazila at about 11:45am on Thursday (June 27).

State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Abdul Wadud (Dara), district council chairman Mir Iqbal, Rajshahi City Awami League general secretary Dablu Sarker, former MP of Rajshahi-3 constituency Ayenuddin, Awami League leaders and workers, and locals took part in the janaza.

When Rajshahi district AL president Anil Sarker went there, the party's leaders and workers got agitated. He is known as mayor AHM Khairuzzaman's follower.

Prior to start of the namaj-e-janaza, Shahriar Alam said, "Akkas was the killer, Meraj was the killer. There are mentors behind them. Akkas was expelled from Awami League two years ago. Khairuzzaman Liton himself termed Akkas and Meraj as killers here. SM Kamal said they were expelled. But, both Akkas and Meraj were seen in Khairuzzaman Liton's car just after seven days of the announcement.

We want answer to AL presidium member AHM Khairuzzaman Liton. Why he is absent from today's namaj-e-janaza? Why he doesn't have courage? We want answer to Advocate Layeb Uddin (Lavlu). Why he is absconding today? Two killers were present during the murder of Ashraful Islam. Case will be filed against AHM Khairuzzaman and Layeb Uddin. We will stay on the street until they are given punishment."

Describing Bagha as a "peaceful place," Shahriar Alam said Bagha is a peaceful place. But, attempts were made two to three years ago to create unrest in Bagha. Many incidents took place here earlier and many could die in those incidents. But, the leaders of Bagha had spared them. Sometimes Babul (Ashraful Islam) faced the consequences and sometimes others. Today, it has claimed Babul's life. They have been trying to create unrest here constantly.
