Lightning killed 3, injured 7 in Rangamati

Three people have died due to lightning in two upazilas of Rangamati. One died in Swarntila of Rangamati Sadar, one in Rupkari Union of Baghaichhari Upazila and one in Sajeke. This incident of lightning occurred during stormy wind and rain around 9 am today Thursday.

At around 9:30 am, the thunderstorm started with gusty wind and rain. At that time, a person named Nazir Ahmad (50) was seriously injured when lightning struck while fishing with a fishing rod in Kaptai Lake in Swarnatila Sileti Para area of Tabalchhari, Rangamati city. He was immediately rescued and taken to Rangamati Sadar General Hospital where the doctor declared him dead. Shaukat Akbar Khan, resident doctor of Rangamati General Hospital, confirmed the matter.

At the same time, a woman named Baharjan (57) was killed by lightning when she went to bring cows to the field in Baradam village of Rupkari union of Baghaichhari upazila.

At that time, 7 people were injured by lightning while sitting in Swapan Chakma's shop in the same area. They are Tarun Chakma (45), Trina Chakma (36), Rabindranath Chakma (62), Susam Lal Chakma (48), Akshay Mani Chakma (36), Pathhar Chakma (52) and Amar Jyoti Chakma (45). The injured are currently undergoing treatment at Baghaichhari Health Complex.

Apart from this, a woman named Tonybala Tripura (37) also died due to lightning at the same time in Longtian neighborhood in Sajek Union.

Baghaichari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Ishtiaq confirmed the casualty in the lightning strike.
