Bangladesh’s Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury held a courtesy meeting with Gilbert F. Houngbo, the Director-General of the International Labor Organization (ILO), today in Geneva, Switzerland on Wednesday.

During the bilateral meeting, the Labour Minister highly praised the leadership and contributions of the ILO in establishing decent work, social justice, and workers' rights across the globe. He also reaffirmed the newly formed Bangladeshi government’s firm commitment toward upholding democracy, human rights, and labour rights.

Welcoming the ILO's proactive initiative to form the Global Coalition for Social Justice, Minister Choudhury called for an expansion of the ILO's strategic cooperation in promoting entrepreneurship and creating sustainable employment opportunities among marginalized communities.

The Minister underscored that Bangladesh has so far ratified 39 ILO conventions, earning the unique distinction of becoming the first country in Asia to ratify all fundamental ILO conventions. He detailed the ongoing progress regarding domestic labor sector reforms and the structured formulation of the National Tripartite Consultative Council.

ILO Director-General Gilbert Houngbo expressed his keen interest in the visible progress of Bangladesh’s ongoing labor sector reforms and highly commended the long-standing partner relationship between the ILO and Bangladesh.
