July activist held in old sabotage case in Faridpur, family alleges harassment

Faridpur Correspondent

Police have arrested a July uprising participant named Sajib Beg in Charbhadrasan upazila of Faridpur, showing him arrested in an older sabotage case and sending him to jail through a court on Tuesday afternoon.

Family members have termed the arrest harassing and conspiratorial, alleging he was picked up by plainclothes police the previous evening, and have demanded his immediate release.

According to local accounts, Sajib was sitting at a tea stall near the South Shimultola intersection close to his home in Shimultola village on Monday evening when a group of plainclothes individuals arrived. Introducing themselves and mentioning an anti-narcotics drive, they called Sajib aside before a police vehicle arrived and officers forced him into the car, taking him to the station. He was subsequently shown arrested in a sabotage case filed at Charbhadrasan Police Station on August 14, 2025, which listed 28 named Awami League activists and several unnamed individuals.

The case's investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Mozammel Haq, confirmed the arrest, stating it was executed in connection with the 2025 political case under higher directives.

However, eyewitnesses and family members disputed the official narrative. Eyewitness Shoyab Sardar stated that plainclothes officers initially engaged in friendly conversation before calling Sajib toward the road and forcing him into a police vehicle under the pretext that the station officer-in-charge wanted to speak with him.

Family members highlighted that Sajib is a recognized July fighter who was previously detained and jailed during the July 2024 mass uprising following protests in Sadarpur upazila, later participating in events honoring July prisoners at Bangla Academy after the political transition. His uncle, Murad Hossain Beg, expressed outrage, stating, "We suffered oppression during the past regime, and now we are being falsely labeled and arrested. I demand my nephew's immediate release."

Refuting allegations of an irregular detention, Charbhadrasan Police Station OC Mohammad Safar Ali maintained that police were unaware of his status as a July fighter, asserting instead that he was arrested based on confidential information regarding local criminal and narcotics-related activities.
