JnU Correspondent

A student of Jagannath University (JnU), Samrat, from the 18th batch of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, was allegedly assaulted by a group of locals led by Shahidul Haque Shahid in Old Dhaka.

When another student, Habib from the 19th batch of the History Department, along with another individual, attempted to intervene, they were reportedly detained by the attackers.

The incident happend at around 11:30 pm on Monday in the Dholaikhal area in the city following a verbal altercation.

According to eyewitnesses, Samrat was passing through a market in Dholaikhal when he accidentally stepped onto an under-construction concrete surface. This led to an argument with local people, who allegedly pushed him. When he resisted, they began assaulting him. In distress, he called his classmates for help, and Habib, along with another student, arrived at the scene.

Upon their arrival, the locals allegedly assaulted and detained the two students. Later, Samrat was rescued and taken to National Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Sources claim that some of the attackers were affiliated with a local political group. The accused, Shahidul Haque Shahid, is known to be the General Secretary of the Nawabpur Shop Owners' Association.

Following the incident, videos and reports spread on social media, prompting JnU students to gather and stage a protest in the Nawabpur area. Some students allegedly vandalized a local club. Police from Wari Police Station arrived at the scene around 1:00 am to bring the situation under control.
