Jamaat wants local polls, proportionate representation system ahead of national election

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami called for holding local polls and introducing the proportionate representative system before the next general elections during a meeting with the chief election commissioner on Thursday.
“The people want local government to be functional, and we also want local elections to be held before the national elections,” said Jamaat’s Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar in a post-meeting briefing. However, the party officials did not respond to queries about BNP’s opposite position on the matter.
Golam Parwar also emphasised completing election-related reforms before holding the general elections.
He clarified that not all reform recommendations need to be implemented immediately, saying only the most urgent election-related recommendations should be addressed.
“At the very least, reforms must be carried out for the institutions and organisations involved in the election process before holding the election. The time required to ensure a fair election should be taken before conducting it,” he explained.
Jamaat is preparing to contest all 300 parliamentary seats and has reportedly finalised its candidates.
"We have exchanged views on making the election free, fair, and participatory. We have discussed both the capabilities and limitations of the Election Commission and have presented 23 demands," he said.
He reiterated that there will be no election without the essential reforms. Without reforms, elections cannot be free and fair, and Jamaat is willing to wait for the necessary time to ensure proper reforms.
“We have advocated for a proportional representation electoral system. This is essential for Bangladesh and for making the parliament functional. Additionally, expatriate voters must be given the opportunity to vote,” he added.
Regarding Jamaat’s registration issue, Golam Parwar mentioned that the matter is pending in court, and they hope to receive fair justice.
He also criticised the strict regulations on political party registration, saying, “These stringent laws should be repealed. Everyone has the right to participate in politics.”
