After a three-year long legal battle in the Union Parishad (UP) elections, Adv. Shamsul Huda has taken oath as the UP Chairman of Gangachara Upazila of Rangpur after the court verdict. The oath was administered by Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rabiul Faisal at 12 pm in the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner on Monday.
It is learned that the election was held in Barabil Union of Gangachara Upazila of Rangpur on December 26, 2021. The returning officer declared Awami League nominated candidate Shahid Chowdhury Dwip as the chairman after showing 6,235 votes. His nearest rival, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-backed independent candidate Advocate Shamsul Huda, received 6,100 votes. Later, Shamsul Huda filed a case with the Rangpur Election Tribunal Court, alleging that the vote was rigged, for a recount of the votes. After a long two and a half years, the judge announced the verdict in favor of Shamsul Huda, who received 402 more votes.
Later, Shahid Chowdhury Dwip appealed to the High Court. On February 13, the High Court dismissed the writ petition and upheld the lower court's verdict and allowed the oath.
