International Day of Older Persons 2026 was observed in Barguna on Thursday  with a rally, discussion meeting, and posthumous honors, organized jointly by the Barguna District Administration, the Department of Social Services, and the Barguna District Probin Hitoishi Sangha.

Zila Parishad Administrator Md. Nazrul Islam Molla attended the program as the guest of honor, while Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Ruhul Amin Howlader and Social Services Office Deputy Director S. M. Shahjada were present as special guests. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Animesh Biswas presided over the event, which was moderated by Monir Hossain Kamal, General Secretary of the Barguna District Probin Hitoishi Sangha.

Centered on this year's theme, "New Thoughts for a Long Life," speakers at the seminar highlighted the imperative of ensuring social security, healthcare, and dignity for senior citizens. They emphasized integrating the experience and expertise of elderly citizens into broader community and national development initiatives.

Discussants included Probin Hitoishi Sangha Vice President A. Z. M. Saleh Farooq, Barguna Press Club President Md. Hafizur Rahman, Islami Andolan Bangladesh Barguna Senior Vice President Maulana Abdus Shakur, former Barishal Division Health Director Dr. Humayun Shahin Khan, former Barguna Government College Principal Professor Pratap Chandra Biswas, Alekanda Government College Principal Professor Dr. Liyakat Hossain Jewel, Barguna District BNP Member Secretary Humayun Hasan Shahin, and Lubna Islam, wife of the Zila Parishad Administrator.

Following the discussion, posthumous honors were conferred upon founding Senior Vice President Alhaj Md. Moked Ahmed Khan, Vice President Alhaj Nur Mohammad Mia, and General Secretary Advocate Belayet Hossain Khan of the Barguna District Probin Hitoishi Sangha. Family members received the commemorative crests on behalf of the deceased leaders.
