'Bhutta Chattar' to become symbol of Lalmonirhat: Dulu

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu on Friday stated that maize has transformed into the signature brand crop of Lalmonirhat, serving as the northern district's primary cash crop and significantly bolstering the rural economy.

He made the observations in the afternoon after formally inaugurating the construction of the "Bhutta Chattar" (Maize Square) in the heart of Lalmonirhat town.

"Maize cultivation has expanded significantly across the district, altering the livelihoods of local farmers and bringing prosperity to their families. Therefore, the central square of the district town has been named Bhutta Chattar and will be constructed with iconic architectural design. Just as India Gate symbolizes Delhi and the Faisal Mosque symbolizes Islamabad, Bhutta Chattar will represent Lalmonirhat," the minister said.

Local agriculturalists noted that while maize yield was initially low during its early introduction in the 1990s in areas like Hatibandha Upazila, suited soil conditions, high yields, and lucrative market prices over the past three decades have led to widespread adoption. Small-scale agro-based processing industries are also emerging around maize production, driving economic progress in the region.

Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Muha. Rashedul Haq Pradhan, District Council Administrator A.K.M. Mominul Haq, alongside senior government officials and political leaders, were present at the inauguration ceremony.
