India successfully tests indigenous anti-submarine missile

International Desk

India on Wednesday successfully conducted the trial of indigenous Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) anti-submarine missile systems.

"The missile system is being developed for the Indian Navy by the Defence Research and Development Organization," a Defence Ministry statement said.

According to defence officials, the missile meant for carrying the light weight torpedo is being developed to enhance the Indian Navy's anti-submarine warfare capability.

The SMART system is a next generation torpedo delivery system. The medium-range supersonic missile carries a torpedo as a payload and a parachute-based release system.

The SMART has a far range far beyond conventional torpedoes to target enemy submarines.

The missile was launched from a ground mobile launcher. It ejects the torpedo with a parachute near the target and consists of advanced technologies like two-stage solid propulsion, electro-mechanical actuators and precision inertial navigation.
