The neighboring India has been requested not to permit exiled former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina to make any statements in the mass media.
Toufique Hasan, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said this while addressing a weekly press conference held at the ministry office in Dhaka on Thursday.
“Sheikh Hasina has been making statements in the Indian mass media, but the interim government strongly disapproves of it. The Indian government has also been requested multiple times in this regard,” he said.
In response to the request, India did not provide a direct reply, however the Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka said that his country is looking into the matter, Hasan said.
Sheikh Hasina, along with many top-ranking leaders of her ousted Awami League government, fled the country and sought refuge in India amid the recent student-led movement.
Responding to a query on the matter, Hasan said that there is no information regarding how many Awami League leaders and officials of the ousted government are currently staying in India.
Since her exile, Sheikh Hasina has reportedly been making statements over the phone for local mass media on different issues including Bangladesh's contemporary political affairs.
Noticing Sheikh Hasina's fresh move, many top officials, including advisers of the interim government, student movement coordinators, and leaders of different political parties, including BNP, have been considering it a threat to the nation's existence.
Meanwhile, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir while talking to reporters at his Thakurgaon residence on Wednesday accused India of engaging in hatching conspiracy against Bangladesh.
“The mastermind of fascism is now staying in India. There is a danger over our heads. We can’t endure any further disaster at this moment. We all will have to remain vigilant otherwise we may face a major disaster,” he said.
