Illegal cigarettes worth Tk 50 million seized at Mongla Port

Customs authorities seized illegal cigarettes worth Tk 50 million during an operation at Mongla Port, located on the coast of the Sundarbans on Tuesday afternoon.
A large quantity of ‘Oris Silver’ brand illegal cigarettes was recovered from a 20-foot container belonging to PIL Bangladesh Limited, stationed at one of the port’s jetties. The importing company, Munni Enterprise, had falsely declared the consignment as ribbons or decorative tape.
According to customs sources, the container held 390 packages containing a total of 7.8 million cigarette sticks, with an estimated market value of approximately Tk 50,456,406.
Commissioner Muhammad Shafiujjaman of Mongla Customs House said, legal action under the Customs Act is being taken against those involved in the incident.
