Hijab not only right, but also component of civilization: JU VC

JU Correspondent

Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan, Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University (JU), has stated that hijab is not only a right for women but also a component of civilization. He made these remarks after a rally organized by the Quran and Cultural Study Club (Female Section) on the occasion of International Hijab Day at 3 PM on Wednesday.

JU VC said, "After hearing a statement by a Western women's rights activist about the special relationship between the development of human civilization and the wearing of clothes, a new realization occurred to me.” “It means that since we started wearing clothes, we have considered ourselves civilized. So, if someone tries to associate hijab with this process by determining the amount of clothing, how can it be considered against civilization? Hijab is not only a right for women, but also an element of civilization," he added.

JU Pro-VC (Academic) Prof M Mahfuzur Rahman emphasized the importance of women's rights, like wearing the hijab, and questioned the need to repeatedly assert these rights due to the common violation of these rights.

Associate Professor Shamima Nasrin Jolly of Botany Department said that International Hijab Day has been celebrated for the first time in Bangladesh, highlighting the humiliation women face for wearing hijab.

Ayesha Siddika Meghla, a postgraduate student, questioned the necessity of wearing the hijab in a Muslim-majority country, arguing that it should be included in the freedom of attire, citing past experiences of tagging.

The event aims to raise awareness about modesty and modernity, promoting dignified, refined, Muslim, and faithful women.
