In Rajapur of Jhalokathi, heifer calves were distributed among 30 registered fishermen as part of an initiative to create alternative income sources. The support was provided under the “Conservation and Development of Indigenous Species of Fish and Snails” project for the fiscal year 2024–25.

The distribution ceremony took place on Tuesday  at 11 a.m. in the Rajapur Upazila Parishad premises. Each fisherman received one heifer calf to help them engage in cattle farming alongside fishing, thereby increasing their household income.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rahul Chandra, the chief guest at the event, stated:
“The government's goal is to improve the quality of life for fishermen and create alternative earning opportunities. By not relying solely on fishing, they can establish a sustainable livelihood through cattle farming.”

Upazila Livestock Officer Md. Abdullah, present as the special guest, added:
“Our department will provide all necessary veterinary services and advice related to cattle farming. We want the fishermen to utilize this assistance effectively to improve their living standards.”

Also present at the event was Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Gautam Mondal, who said:
“The main objective of the indigenous fish and snail conservation project is not only to protect natural resources but also to ensure financial security for those who depend on them, like fishermen.”

The fishermen expressed happiness upon receiving the heifers. They shared that as the cows grow, they will be able to earn through milk sales and breeding, opening new possibilities for their households. Welcoming this government initiative, local residents also hoped that such programs would expand in the future and include people from other professions as well.
