Heavy rains flooded low-lying areas : Landslides in 125 places in Rangamati district

Heavy rains from upstream have flooded low-lying areas of Baghaichhari and Barkal upazilas. Although the continuous heavy rains in Rangamati Hill District have eased somewhat, the flood situation in Baghaichhari Upazila of the district is still unchanged. 370 families are trapped in the water. They are being brought to shelters.
According to the Rangamati Regional Meteorological Observatory, 92 millimeters of rainfall has been recorded in Rangamati in the last 24 hours. Despite the decrease in rainfall, a large population of the district is still staying in shelters due to the risk of landslides and flood conditions.
According to the latest information received from the district administration, landslides have occurred in a total of 125 places in seven upazilas of the district. Kaptai 32, Baghaichhari 3, Kaukhali 30, Rangamati Sadar-13, Naniarchar-6, Bilaichhari-37, Longdu-4. Out of the 122 shelters in the district, 4,392 people are currently sheltering in 40 shelters. 370 families are trapped in water. They are being brought to the shelters.

Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Najma Ashrafi said that the flood and landslide situation in the district is being monitored with great importance. 4,392 people have already been brought to safe shelters. The District and Upazila administration is fully prepared to deal with any emergency situation, the Deputy Commissioner also said.
Baghaichhari UNO Amane Marjan said, even though the water has not risen again due to the reduction in heavy rains, the low-lying areas of Baghaichhari are still flooded. The families trapped in water have been rescued quickly and brought to the shelters. Besides, tourists stranded in Sajek were evacuated safely this morning with the help of the army.
