The High Court has ordered the authorities concerned to repatriate 157 foreign nationals – 19 of those are women, who have been detained in various jails in Bangladesh though they served their prison terms.
The bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque passed the order on Thursday after hearing a writ petition.
Barrister Bibhuti Tarafdar argued for the petition which was also filed by him on 11 January, while Deputy Attorney General Amit Das Gupta represented the state.
On 15 January, the HC bench heard the petition and asked for a list of the foreign nationals kept in prisons even after they served their sentences.
On 18 January, the Department of Prisons sent a report to the Attorney General's Office saying 157 foreigners, including 150 Indians, five Myanmar nationals, and one each from Pakistan and Nepal, were waiting to be repatriated after the completion of their prison terms.
