Foreign adviser meets Red Cross’ new Bangladesh chief

Adviser for foreign affairs Md Touhid Hossain on Monday welcomed Alberto Bocanegra Vidal as the new head of delegation of Red Cross in Bangladesh, during a meeting with the latter at Bangladesh Secretariat.
Touhid received Alberto’s “letter of credence,” and assured of him of all-out support from the interim government in discharging his responsibilities.
Alberto briefed the adviser about IFRC activities in Bangladesh, particularly about their early warning system, role during the recent floods in Bangladesh, and for the service of the temporarily sheltered Rohingya people in Bangladesh as well as the host community.
The adviser appreciated the activities of IFRC, ICRC and BDRCS in Bangladesh, their contribution during the Covid-19 pandemic, and timely response to the floods.
He said that the interim government is extending support to the flood-affected people and would welcome voluntary assistance from the partners and friends of Bangladesh.
He further said that Bangladesh is deeply concerned over the current challenges it faces in terms of security, human trafficking, environment and various socio-economic problems for hosting the Rohingya people for over seven years now.
He reiterated that the Rohingya people will have to return to Myanmar, and sought the support of international community, in this regard.
