Food minister seeks support from FAO to boost mango export
Staff Correspondent
Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder has called upon the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations to extend its support to boost mango exports in different countries across the world.
The food minister came up with the call when Dr Jiaoqun Shi, newly appointed representative of the FAO in Bangladesh, called on Majumder at his Secretariat office in Dhaka on Thursday.
During the meeting, Majumdar discussed the country's comprehensive food and fruit management system, as well as the trade potential of mango, one of the most grown fruits in Bangladesh, in the global market.
He claimed that Bangladesh has already gained self-sufficiency in food grain production while it is in the process of achieving self-dependency in fruit and vegetable production.
Bangladesh produces approximately 2.5 million tonnes of mangoes annually, but the export volume remains disproportionately minimal compared to its production.
Besides, Jiaoqun Shi said that the FAO is working relentlessly to ensure food security in Bangladesh and the efforts will continue in the future.
Bangladesh exported 2,700 tonnes of mangoes in 2023, which is 1,000 tonnes more than in 2022.
Mangoes were exported to 28 countries in 2022, but in 2023 the number rose to 34.
Bangladesh exports mangoes to many countries including the United Kingdom, Italy, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Singapore, Switzerland, Germany, France, Sweden, Kuwait, and Canada.
