Five individuals have been arrested in connection with the recent attack on a Dhaka University (DU) bus near the BNS Center in Uttara in the city.
Police conducted overnight raids following the incident and confirmed the arrests but have not disclosed the identities of the detainees, citing the ongoing investigation.
The attack occurred on Sunday in the aftermath of a tragic road accident, where an SSC examinee was killed by a BRTC truck in front of the BNS Center. In response, students staged a road blockade protest at the scene. During the protest, a group comprising some students and outsiders vandalised a Kshanika bus belonging to Dhaka University. Several DU students were injured in the attack.
Upon learning of the incident, DU Proctor Associate Prof Saifuddin Ahmed immediately contacted law enforcement to ensure the safety of students, facilitate medical care for the injured, and identify and apprehend the perpetrators. He also coordinated with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Later that night, DU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan and Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed visited Uttara West Police Station to lodge a formal complaint. During discussions with police officials, the Vice Chancellor urged the authorities to take swift action and bring those responsible to justice.
The Dhaka University administration has reiterated its firm commitment to ensuring the safety of all members of the university community both on and off-campus. The administration has pledged to take all necessary measures to protect students and staff.
