Fisheries Week inaugurated in Gaibandha

National Fisheries Week was celebrated in a festive atmosphere in Gaibandha under the theme, “A Self-Reliant Nation Through Silver Fish, Bangladesh First.” To mark the occasion, the Gaibandha District Administration and the District Fisheries Department organized a colorful rally, discussion meeting, release of fish fingerlings, and an award-giving ceremony for successful fish farmers on Monday.
A colourful rally started from Swadhinata Prangan in the morning and paraded through the main streets of the town. Later, Member of Parliament Md. Abdul Karim released fish fingerlings into the municipal park pond as the chief guest.
Earlier, a discussion meeting was held at the District Shilpakala Academy Auditorium with Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Masudur Rahman Molla in the chair.
Among others, speeches were delivered by Additional Superintendent of Police Bidrohi Kumar Kundu, District BNP General Secretary Mahamudunnabi Titul, District Fisheries Officer Mohammad Abdur Rashed, Sadar Upazila BNP President Mosharraf Hossain Babu, General Secretary Moksud Master, Municipal BNP President Shahiduzzaman Shahid, District Jatiyatabadi Matsyajibi Dal President Shamim Ahmed Palash, fish farmer Sadequl Islam Sumon, and Majidul Islam.
The program was moderated by Sadar Upazila Fisheries Officer Md. Marjan Sarkar.
The speakers highlighted the significant contribution of the fisheries sector to the country's nutrition security, employment generation, and economic development. They emphasized the importance of expanding modern fish farming technologies, conserving water bodies, and increasing fish production to further strengthen the sector.
