Speakers at a roundtable discussion have underscored the need for holding the 12th parliamentary election in a free, fair and inclusive manner for the sake of the country’s overall stability.

The roundtable discussion was held at a hotel in Dhaka on Friday, where esteemed individuals from various professions collectively emphasised on the issue for the continued improvement of the country's overall stability.

Taking part in the event, Zayadul Ahsan Pintu, editor of DBC News, a 24-hour news channel in Bangladesh, said a significant political party is currently out of the electoral process but its participation was important for holding the national election in an inclusive manner.

Mozammel Babu, managing director of Ekattor Television, also put his importance on holding the upcoming general election in a free and fair manner.

He also expressed his optimism saying that ‘the current administration will be able to reflect the people’s expectations in the election.

Shyamal Dutta, editor of Daily Bhorer Kagoj, said that a non-communal society is essential for the comprehensive stability of the country. “We might have to experience another grenade attack if the BNP comes to power.”

Pijush Bandyopadhyay, CEO of Ekushey Television, said that the people aspire to reside in a non-communal and peaceful society.

The authorities concerned should remain alert so that the security of the country’s minority groups is not hampered and they can come to their respective polling centres without fear.

Former Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) Shahadat Hossain said that the upcoming national election is not going to be held inclusively but a majority percent of people are taking part in the election process.

He, however, appreciated the activities of the current election commission and said the incumbent commission is active compared to the previous commissions.

Dr Zeenat Huda said that the current administration is capable enough to hold a free and fair election in the country. No one can halt the election by resorting to arson attacks. The people will boycott those who will boycott the election, she added.

Former Inspector General of Police Nurul Huda, journalists Masud Kamal, Abu Saeed Khan, Naeem Nizam, Dr Sadeka Halim, Dr Hasan Mahmud Khaldaker, Ashraf Uddin Chunnu, Abul Hossain Chowdhury, among others spoke at the roundtable discussion.
