Expelled Jubo Dal cadre Madhav, the head of the Madhav Bahini in Sylhet has been arrested on charges of kidnapping, beating and extortion by the Kotwali Police with the help of Sunamganj District Police from Shantiganj Upazila of Sunamganj district.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md. Rezaul Karim PPM ( Service) supervised the arrest in the face of the hawker movement.

The arrested Madhav is the expelled co-organizing secretary of Sylhet Metropolitan Jubo Dal.

Madhav was a victim of torture during the Sheikh Hasina government, but after August 5, he seems to have become reckless. Occupying shops in the Par area of Zindabazar Jalla, extortion from every line of hawkers. There are various allegations against him, including beating and kidnapping and torture, when he expressed his inability to pay the ransom. Madhav, the head of the Madhav Bahini, is a living terror in the area.

On Sunday, Shantiganj Police Station OC Akram Ali and SMP Kotwali Police Station OC Ziaul Haque confirmed that he was arrested from the Shantiganj Police Station area of Sunamganj.

Kotwali Police Station OC Ziaul Hasan said that Madhav was arrested in Devkona area of Shantiganja Police Station. He is the son of Ajit Chowdhury of Dariapara area of the city. A case filed against him by Md. Kajal Mia (50), husband of deceased Abdul Wab, Sang Surma Market, Taltala Sylhet, has been registered at Kotwali Police Station. Its number is 01.1/3/2025

The police said that on February 28, a hawker named Kajal was kidnapped from the sidewalk in front of the Sylhet District Council and beaten up to collect the remaining amount of the demanded extortion money from Sitara Mansion in Zindabazar, Sylhet.

At one stage, after collecting 16,500 taka, he was inhumanly tortured for another thirty thousand taka. After the incident came to light, hawker traders and locals took to the streets on Friday night and continued to protest by blocking the road.

On receiving the news, Sylhet Metropolitan BNP General Secretary Imdad Hossain Chowdhury rushed to calm the situation. He assured the hawkers that organizational measures would be taken. Two hours later, Jubo Dal leader Joydev Chowdhury announced the expulsion of Madhav from the party.

In the incident that took place on Saturday, hawker trader Kajal Mia filed a case against Joydeep Chowdhury, a drug dealer, and his second-in-command Shakib as the plaintiff, alleging kidnapping and extortion.

In that case, Madhav was sent to jail through the court, confirmed Sylhet Metropolitan Police's ADC Media Saiful Islam.

It is mentioned that since the incident, many of the Madhav Bahini caterers from the Zindabazar area have gone into hiding due to fear of attacks by hawkers and to avoid police arrest, according to
