Expatriate hacked to death in Kalia

An expatriate named Akram Sheikh (40) was hacked to death in a clash over territorial dominance in Char-Joynagar village under Naragati Police Station of Kalia Upazila, Narail.

The deceased, a resident of Char-Shuktail village, was the son of Md. Hekmat Sheikh. Akram had recently returned home on a three-month leave from abroad.

The incident took place on Wednesday at around 8 pm.

According to lsources, there had been a longstanding conflict between the groups led by Hekmat Sheikh and Ansar Jamadar over local supremacy in Char-Joynagar village. On the evening of the incident, Akram Sheikh went to Tafsir's tea stall for tea, where 15-20 members of the Ansar Jamadar group launched a sudden attack, hacking him brutally. Locals rescued him and rushed him to the 250-bed General Hospital in Gopalganj, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

A state of mourning prevails at the victim's residence, with grieving family members lamenting the loss. The family claims that Akram was deliberately killed due to the long-standing dispute.

Meanwhile, Narail District Superintendent of Police Kazi Ehsanul Haque and the Commanding Officer of the Narail Army Camp visited the scene. The Superintendent of Police assured that the perpetrators would be brought to justice swiftly.

Following the clash, the rival group reportedly looted and set fire to over fifty houses, according to local sources.

In response to the incident, additional law enforcement personnel have been deployed in the area, and efforts are underway to maintain order and stability.
