On Sunday (April 21) at 11:30 am, Gazipur Environment Movement (GAPA) held this human chain program in front of the Rajendrapur range office under the Dhaka Forest Department.
The speakers in the human chain said that the government forest area of Gazipur is occupied by a class of forest bandits and is illegally building various facilities and factories. On the one hand, forest land is being cleared, on the other hand it is having an adverse effect on the natural environment and climate. A class of dishonest officers and employees of the forest department are directly and indirectly cooperating in this encroachment.
Besides, numerous illegal sawmills have been established around the protected forest areas. In these sawmills, forest trees are cut and wood is smuggled. Speakers said that Mehdi Hasan, general secretary of Gazipur Environment Movement, recently filed a writ petition in the High Court demanding the encroachment of encroached forest land and eviction of illegal sawmills. In view of this, the court directed the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change to take necessary measures including the issuance of rulings to evict the encroachment.
