Essential prices can't be hiked in any way: Finance adviser

Finance and Commerce adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed has told the country's business community not to raise the prices of essentials in any way.
He made the request while hold ing a meeting with six large edible oils and sugar refinery companies at the Finance Ministry's conference room at the Planning Commission on early Tuesday afternoon.
The Finance and Commerce adviser mentioned that among the daily essentials, edible oils and sugar are widely used in Bangladesh. The present goverment wants that the supply chains of those products would be kept active and reach the hands of people at rational prices. The businessmen's cooperation is crucial in this regard.
Mentioning that steps would be taken to open LCs and reducing the LC margins, Dr Saleh Uddin Ahmed insisted that the prices of edible oils and sugar could not be hiked in any way affecting commoners.
The businessmen mentioned that they needed to pay Tk 42 as VAT and other taxes on one kilogram of sugar. It's absolutely injustice, and doesn't exist anywhere in the world.
They also called for refixing the existing VAT and taxes.
The opinion-sharing meeting was attended by the representatives of Deshbandhu Group, Meghna Group, S Alam Group, TK Group and City Group.
