ERDFB condemns arson attack on Benapol Express

Staff Correspondent

Education Research & Development Forum of Bangladesh (ERDFB) has condemned the sabotage over train communication in Bangladesh in the name of political violence that claims a couple of innocent lives.

ERDFB, an apex platform of top-notch university faculties, has urged the political parties to support democracy instead of violence on the eve of the 12th parliamentary election.

At least four people were killed and several injured as a moving train was set on fire at Gopibagh in Bangladesh capital Dhaka Friday evening, the eve of the BNP’s hartal, or shutdown, aimed at disrupting the January 7 vote.

In a statement on Saturday, ERDFB President Prof Sazzad Hossain said that the BNP-Jamaat alliance restarted the arson-based politics when the country appeared to have peaceful elections with a majority of registered parties.

“As a peaceful country, Bangladesh allows meetings, rallies, and strikes as per the constitutional rights of the people. However, the constitution never allows arson attacks on trains or any type of sabotage in the name of political activities,” said Hossain, a member of the University Grants Commission (UGC) in Bangladesh.

The academician has urged all, including youths, to go to the polling centre to cast votes for flourishing democracy in the country and make a befitting answer to the anti-democratic force.
