Empty nets of fishermen in Meghna : Sitting with nets in desire to catch fish

Rafiqul Islam Rana, Araihazar (N'ganj)

B. Bancharampur of Baria in the east, Homna of Comilla in the north, Narsingdi Sadar and Madhabari areas, Araihazar of Narayanganj in the west and the vast Meghna River flowing in the south. In the meantime, a remote char area of Araihazar upazila is located in Karapahariya Union. In addition, some parts of Khagkanda and Bishnandi Unions are also under its jurisdiction.

Most of the people of Kalapahariya, Bishnandi and Khagkanda Unions are fishermen and farmers by profession. Those who are fishermen go out in groups with boats and nets to catch fish from the river in the morning. They catch fish in the river, sell them to various markets and wholesalers and return home at night. However, recently, why is it that not much fish is available in Meghna. Fishermen say that even in the high season, fish are not available in the Meghna as before. If you leave the net, you will only catch fish. But many times, if you pull the dry net, the net will be empty.

Those who do agriculture work on the char land. The main crops of this region are paddy, jute, wheat, corn, beans, cassava, mustard, etc.

This union has been affected by the erosion of the Meghna. A village called Charlakhipur in this union has already been submerged in the erosion of the Meghna. There was a government primary school in that village, which was submerged in the waters of the Meghna. Nine more villages have also been affected by this erosion.

Although this area is the birthplace of several famous educated people, the literacy rate here is very low. Since the boys have to cast nets in the river with their parents or catch fish with dry nets or work in agriculture from their adolescence, their education is not very good. However, those who get the opportunity to study, study well and remain there.

There is a sub-health center and a police investigation center in Kalapahariya area. However, the area is located in the Meghna basin and as the Greater Meghna flows in all directions, it is isolated from the mainland of the upazila. Therefore, the crime rate there is also relatively high.

Muhitul Islam Hiru, a conscious citizen of the area, said that since it is surrounded by the river, the residents of Kalapahariya are engaged in fishing and agricultural work. Now, fish is no longer available in the river as before. Many people in the area are deprived of government and private facilities. There is no other means of communication except boats to go far away from home. However, since the people of the area are very simple, no one has any complaints about this.

Araihazar Police Station OC Md. Sabzel Hossain said that there is a police investigation center there to improve the law and order situation in Kalapahariya. The police are always working there to improve the law and order situation.

Benazir Ahmed, in-charge of Kalapahariya Sub-Health Center, said that the residents of Kalapahariya are getting many benefits in the field of medical treatment due to the sub-health center.
