Electricity production starts at 150-MW power plant Chandpur

Sagar Chowdhury, Chandpur

Chandpur 150- MW Combined Cycle Power Plant has produced 50 -MW out of 100- MW units due to gas shortage on Monday.

A small fire at the power plant caused by oil leakage in generator bearings halted production on April 5. After the repair work, the center went into production on Monday night.

Nurul Abshar, manager (supervisory engineer) of the power generation center, confirmed this information on Tuesday morning.

Earlier, after being closed for 14 months as part of regular testing from December 2022, Chandpur 150 MW gas turbine unit came into production on March 10 this year. However, another 50 MW unit could not be commissioned. It was operational till March. On April 5, a small fire from a well leak in a generator bearing halted production again.

Engineer Nurul Abshar said, power generation has started again after 1 month and 8 days shutdown for repair work of well leakage in the generator bearing of 100 MW unit of the production plant. However, due to gas shortage, the production of 50 MW of 100 MW unit is now possible. Talked to the gas company. If the supply of gas increases, 100 MW production will be possible.

Currently 50- MW of electricity generated will be connected to the national grid.

This power generation plant has two units. One is 100 MW and the other is 50 MW. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of this power plant on April 25, 2010.

The center started generating electricity from March 2012. The Chinese company Chengda Engineering Limited built this power plant at a cost of Tk 1,200 crore.
