DoE raids textile mills, washing plants in N'ganj, Keraniganj over river pollution

Staff Correspondent

The Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday conducted drives against industrial pollution in Narayanganj and South Keraniganj, collecting liquid waste samples from several factories to curb illegal discharges into waterways.

The enforcement operations were carried out as part of government directives to keep rivers around the capital navigable and free from pollution.

In Narayanganj, a DoE Dhaka regional office team inspected six factories in the Fatullah, Namapara, Sastapur, and Kutubpur areas. The inspected units are Eurotex Knitwear Ltd., Karnaphuli Textile Mill, Dhaka Textiles Mills, MM Dyeing, M/S Shaheen Textile Mill, and IFS Texwear. Effluent samples were gathered from the sites for laboratory analysis, and authorities warned that strict legal action under environmental laws will follow if toxic discharges are detected.

Simultaneously, a separate team from the DoE Dhaka district office raided Ajan Washing and Al Amin Washing plants in South Keraniganj. Investigators discovered that both facilities were operating without environmental clearance certificates or Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs). Liquid waste samples were collected from the premises, while several other washing units in the vicinity were found shut down during the inspection.

The DoE reiterated that routine monitoring, factory inspections, and punitive legal measures will continue to protect water bodies and public health.
