Assasuni (Satkhira) Correspondent

The Satkhira District Citizens’ Committee and Climate Change Advisory Forum organized a discussion meeting and press conference after visiting the recent river erosion-affected areas in Assasuni on Monday  noon at the Assasuni Press Club auditorium, with Press Club President G.M. Al Faruk in the chair.

The chief guest at the event was Adv  Sheikh Azad Hossain Belal, Convener of the Climate Change Advisory Forum. Other speakers included retired Principal Professor Abdul Hamid, General Secretary of the District Citizens’ Committee Madhab Chandra Dutta, Joint Secretary Alinur Khan Bablu, Master Shahidul Islam (News Editor of Dainik Patradut), LEADERS Admin Officer Asit Kumar Mondal, and Advocacy Officer Swapan Folia, among others.

The event was also attended by former Press Club Presidents G.M. Mujibur Rahman and S.M. Ahsan Habib, former General Secretary Samir Roy, former Organizing Secretary Akash Hossain, Reporters Club President Rabid Mahmud Chanchal, former President Mostafizur Rahman, Acting General Secretary B.M. Alauddin, Organizing Secretary Linkon Aslam, and Press Club member Sheikh Adabad Hossain, along with other local journalists.

Speakers highlighted that on March 31, the embankment (constructed by BWDB) of the Kholpetua River in the Bichat area of Anulia Union collapsed, flooding 6–7 villages. Hundreds of people became waterlogged and took shelter in nearby cyclone centers and on embankments. Many houses were destroyed, agricultural land and fish farms were submerged, leading to the decay of crops and fish, which caused a foul odor in the area. There is now an acute shortage of drinking water, food, livestock feed, and poultry supplies.

Speakers demanded the immediate construction of a sustainable embankment, activation of all sluice gates in coastal regions, formation of a Coastal Board, and the rehabilitation of flood victims along with urgent food and relief support. They called upon both the government and non-governmental organizations to come forward and support the affected communities.
