
Destruction of illegal bamboo dams, nets in Padma river in Rajbari

In the operation of Rajbari Sadar Upazila Sinion Fisheries Department, in 2023/24 fiscal year, two illegal large bamboo dams across the Padma river in Udakanda and Sonakanda areas have been destroyed for Jatka conservation, bamboo dams and fisheries conservation.
Rajbari Sadar Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Mustafa Al Rajib along with a team of Fisheries Department and Daulatdia Naval Police participated in the operation on Thursday (December 21). At this time, the dams made of bamboo and nets across the Padma river were cut with saws, destroyed and removed.
According to the Fisheries Office sources, according to the Fisheries Protection and Conservation Act 1950, killing fish by damming the river is a punishable offense. In continuation of this Two large bamboo dams, 5 thousand meters of illegal current nets and 5 Chinese double nets were seized and destroyed by fire in Udakanda area. Bamboo dams worth approximately Tk 2 lakh and nets worth Tk 75 thousand were destroyed.
